How to remove late payments from your credit report

Late payments are tricky because they're often accurate — you did pay 30/60/90 days late. But 'accurate' is not the same as 'verifiable to FCRA standards' — and even when the late is verified, goodwill letters delete them at meaningful rates. The path to removal depends on the age, the creditor, and your payment history since.

How late payments hurt your score

A single 30-day late drops a 750+ score by 60-110 points. A 90-day late drops it by 130-180 points. Late payments stay on the file for 7 years from the date of the late, even if you bring the account current. The damage decays — a 4-year-old late hurts less than a 6-month-old late — but it doesn't go to zero until removal.

Goodwill letters: the underrated tool

If the late is on a paid-in-full account where you have an otherwise clean history with the creditor (5+ years, no other lates), a goodwill letter directly to the creditor's customer-relations team works about 30-40% of the time. The letter requests deletion as a one-time courtesy in recognition of your relationship. Loosn drafts it in your voice automatically on Pro+.

FCRA disputes for inaccurate lates

The most common reasons a late is removable via dispute: (1) the late was caused by the creditor's processing error (lost payment, hold), (2) the late was during an active hardship plan that the creditor agreed to but never documented internally, (3) the late was on an authorized-user account where the primary account holder was responsible, (4) the late was reported with the wrong payment due date. Loosn AI flags each of these patterns automatically when it reads your file.

The Loosn process for a late payment

Loosn analyzes each late, classifies it by goodwill-candidate vs FCRA-dispute-candidate, and writes the corresponding letter. On Pro+Auto-Send, Lob.com mails goodwill letters to the original creditor (different address than the bureaus) AND FCRA dispute letters to the bureau in the same round. Round two on no-response: escalation.

Frequently asked questions

Will paying off the account remove the late payment?
No — the late stays for 7 years from the date of the late, even after the balance is zeroed. Goodwill letters or successful disputes are the only paths to removal.
Should I send a goodwill letter to my credit card company myself?
You can — Loosn writes the letter in your name and you can send it directly. On Pro+Auto-Send we route via Lob.com certified mail (which is more effective for goodwill because it lands in the credit relations department, not customer service).
Does the bureau ever refuse to delete a late even if Loosn shows it's wrong?
Sometimes — round one is automated. Round two with a furnisher-direct dispute under FCRA 623(a)(8) deletes the rest most of the time. If the creditor still refuses to investigate properly, that's a willful-non-compliance setup for an FCRA damages claim (15 USC 1681n) — though Loosn does not file lawsuits, it positions the paper trail correctly.
